William McIlvanney was born in Glasgow in 1947. He is the author of four collections of short stories, two novels, and a collection of essays on the art of writing. His first novel, The Pleasure of Eliza Fraser (1980), won the Scottish Arts Council Award for fiction. It was followed by The Last Testament of Ballyhoo (1984), The South Country (1987), and two volumes of short stories
He has also written two novels set in Glasgow, The Prison-House of Sleep (1992) and A Land Fit for Heroes (1997). He lives in Glasgow.
